Matthine, an oblong turtle who loved to sing along to Jeopardy, could not bring herself to throw the milk out. The half-gallon of organic 2% had lived in her fridge for three months, and they had established a mutually beneficial arrangement. The milk provided Matthine with dating advice in return for living rent-free on the lowest shelf. However, certain complications had arisen. The milk had begun leaving its laundry in the produce drawer and growling if the door was opened before noon. Also, there had been a minor dispute about a lizard named Antoine that Matthine didn’t care to repeat.
