Janet was a mozzarella cheese in Steve’s fridge. She just sat in the dark and hummed the theme song to The Persuaders, which was her favorite TV show. But about four weeks after her expiry date, Janet began to feel different. Her plastic tub got too tight, and she was hungry all the time even though she had eaten what she could find on the shelf; three rubbery baby carrots, a radish, and two kippers that she washed down with a French vinaigrette. A month later, she changed her last name to Gorgonzola and joined Steve’s acapella group as an alto.
