“No!” Xenia said. She was a stork with a permanent Monday attitude and clacked her two-inch nails on the keyboard for no other reason than to emphasize her statement.

“But,” said Norbert, a buffalo with a strong wish to pay for the two avocados so he could get back to his audiobook on the Dutch Masters. “You’re the only cashier that’s open.”

“Sir,” said Xenia. “I said no.”

“Why is the light above your register on then?” Norbert said and looked to the camel behind him for support and got a shrug.

“Just no,” said Xenia again. “Move on, Sir.”
